Chapter 13

After agreeing not to try to kill each other again, Cross set Zac and Angus up in quarters on the base and with a change of clothes before going to his quarters to clean up. It would raise too many questions for three high-ranking officers to head out on a tour of the base looking as if they’d just been in a fight, even if it were true.

Zac was conflicted with his feelings. He still hated Cross for what he’d done, inadvertent or not. The doctor had always been pragmatic like that, only concerned with his experiments and to hell with the consequences. And when Zac thought about the revelation that Cross was a REV, he kicked himself for not seeing it earlier. The clues had been there all along, not the least being his endless youth, as well as his complete lack of fear when around deadly NT-4 REVs.

And now this base. It was sprawling, with thousands of troops and some of the most high-tech manufacturing facilities Zac had ever seen. He had to admit that he was curious and would set aside any animosity toward Cross for the time being.

The doctor arrived at their quarters half an hour later sporting a new khaki uniform. He’d cleaned the blood from his face, and except for a little residual swelling of his face and bruising under his eyes, showed no other signs of his fight with a Delta REV. Very few people could fight a Delta and live to talk about it.

Zac was cleaned up, as well, although the cut on his lip was still evident. Cross drove an open-top Jeep, beginning the tour of the base in the wee hours of the Enif morning. Zac and Angus were on different time schedules than this part of the planet, and they hadn’t been on Enif long enough to acclimate. Besides, REVs rarely got tired. All three of them were wide awake and full of energy.

“Why didn’t Admiral Gibson tell us about this place?” Zac asked. “This is a major facility, doing cutting-edge research.”

Cross grinned sheepishly. “That’s because he doesn’t know about it.”

“How can that be? He’s the head of Earth’s space military.”

“Look around you, Zac. Do you see a lot of traditional military here? You don’t, although a few. We get some of our funding from obscure government think-tanks and agencies you’ve never heard of. But most of our resources come from private entities.”

“Like your mysterious benefactor? I thought the two of you had a falling out,” Zac prompted.

“We made up, and now he’s one of our largest investors.”

“But you have 308s here,” Angus pointed out. “Those fighters cost half a billion dollars each.”

“Not to the manufacturer,” Cross said. “Summerlin Industries is a major contributor to our efforts.”

“Your friend has ties to Summerlin?” Zac asked.

Cross grimaced. “Since this is a day of revelations, it will probably come as no surprise to you that my so-called benefactor is Howard Summerlin himself.”

“The Howard Summerlin?” Angus gasped. “He’s still alive? He would have to be in his … bloody hell, is he a REV, too?”

Cross laughed.
